Like everything that will be published in to the public domain, new knitting patterns also need to be proof-read. Many designers may initially use Test Knitters to check their patterns work OK when they knit them. This will pick up basic pattern errors, but will not check the overall picture and chosen style of the pattern. As your Tech Editor I will help make your pattern look professional, attractive, error free and easy to use – and therefore be more sell-able.
As your chosen Tech Editor I will:
- check the pattern makes sense and will produce the item shown in the photo(s)
- check your chosen yarn, needle size and gauge work together
- all needles used are listed
- all notions are listed and correct numbers given
- all abbreviations used are included and all abbreviations listed are used
- check written instructions against charts
- check the gauge measurements against final measurements given
- the overall clarity of the pattern
- …….and that the maths ALL work – probably the bit I enjoy the most (yes I am a bit of a geek!)
I am happy to work on standard accessories and garments, from single to multiple sizes. Plain, patterned, multi-coloured and simple lace-work. No advanced techniques please, but please check-in with me to clarify. I am very happy to work with brand new designers (discounts available) and those who are more experienced, from anywhere geographically. Patterns must be in English.
My normal Terms of Business:
I will require your pattern to be as complete as possible, to include photos, charts, schematics and style sheets if you use them.
I will offer a quote, usually on an hourly basis but a fixed rate may be negotiated if this is how you prefer to work (I will retain the right to increase my charge if more work is needed than originally agreed).
I will normally expect to do my first edit within 1 week of your quote acceptance and check the second edit within 3 working days of receipt. If there is a cascading numerical error then more re-checks may be needed. If you require your pattern to be processed faster, I will let you know if I have availability for this.
Your Invoice will only be issued once you are happy with the final version. Payment is due within 14 days of issue – please let me know if you will have a problem with this.
I prefer to communicate by email but I am also happy to message via Facebook or Instagram. For face to face chats I prefer to use Zoom. If you prefer to use other methods then please let me know.
My normal charges:
£30 minimum charge for the first hour.
+ £5 per 15 minutes after the first hour (I use an electronic timer).
+ 20% if a first edit is required within 3 days
+ 50% if a first edit is required the following day
Discounts are negotiable for multiple patterns submitted together or to be submitted on a regular basis.
A 50% discount is offered for first time pattern designers.

As a guideline:
Accessories such as beanies, cowls, mittens, socks will take 1 to 2 hours for up to 4 sizes.
Garments such as tee shirts, vest tops, shawls will take 3 to 4 hours for up to 9 sizes.
Garments such as sweaters, cardigans, hoodies will take 4 to 6 hours for up to 9 sizes.
These are average times for straight forward designs, extra time will be needed for checking against charts or unusual patterns/techniques.
